Anaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic digestion, or AD, is in some ways similar to composting in that it is a natural, biological treatment process whereby organic matter is broken down by bacteria, but unlike composting, AD is carried out by methane bacteria in an oxygen-free environment, otherwise known as anaerobic conditions.

The methane bacteria work by removing the decomposition products of other anaerobic bacteria and turning them into a mixture of methane gas and carbon dioxide – the result is Biogas.

Because Biogas is produced by a natural process, it is extremely environmentally friendly. Biogas is also sustainable and therefore an ideal alternative to the world’s rapidly dwindling fossil fuels.
